Fifty-three border police officers, including the head of the local border police, from the Albita border crossing point in eastern Romania were taken in for questioning Monday following raids at the customs point and suspects’ homes.
People close to the investigation said the officers are suspected of bribe taking and cigarette smuggling. The 53 officers, including their chief-commissioner, Daniel Corban, will be taken in for questioning in capital Bucharest.
The sources said no customs workers have been taken in for questioning.
