Minister of Regional Development and Public Administration Liviu Dragnea says Romania will be divided into eight or nine development regions by the end of the year which leadership could be elected in indirect elections.

Dragnea told ProTv private broadcaster that the exact number of the future regions has not been set yet, but analyses so far indicate two possible solutions for Romania’s division: eight or nine regions.

He pointed out that the leadership of the new regions could be elected at the next local elections.

‘In 2016, regional chairs and regional councillors will be elected on the same day as mayors and county council officials, under the same system, in direct election by the citizens. This is one of the two versions,’ said Dragnea.
